Pestilence – a contagious or infectious epidemic disease that is virulent and devastating
As I write this, the world is in the epi-center of a “pestilence” called coronavirus or Covid-19. This epidemic has become pandemic, affecting millions around the globe. It adequately defines “walketh in darkness” because this disease’s origin has not been clearly identified (at least undeniably), nor has the medical community been able so far to identify a cure or at least sustainable treatment. This is unlike anything the world has seen before. As a result, the noise of fear and hopelessness can quite easily drown out the voices of faith, and hope.
Mankind has always been an easy target for “fear of the unknown”. Long before Covid-19 arrived and long after it has dissipated, sickness and disease , or the dread of what might occur, can still be quite daunting and paralyzing. Jesus came into the world so that we would be able to both have and enjoy life (John 10:10 AMPC paraphrased). He wants us to have a full life, which is impossible if we allow the kryptonite of the fear of pestilence to have sovereignty. Some scholars have counted at least 365 times the Lord said in the scriptures “do not fear”. It doesn’t mean we won’t ever be afraid. It is His voice, His Words, His presence that comfort and give us peace.
Remember when you were afraid of the dark and you ran into your parent’s room; or maybe it was the light in the hallway that soothed and relaxed you. The circumstance didn’t change, but your perspective did. Why, because of the presence of one greater and more powerful than you was your keeper. Their presence, or the light, made you feel safe and you eventually slept.
May the light of the Word of God, the revelation of His finished work on the cross; illuminate your life in such a way as to give you peaceful rest. Sickness and disease may still show up, but they are no match for what He has said. By His stripes we were healed.
