In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.
Ephesians 6:16 NLT
We all relish in the fact that the God of the Universe knows us by name. We sing songs about it. We acknowledge His goodness and faithfulness towards us; especially when He meets and exceeds our specific needs, desires, hopes and dreams. He gives us far beyond what we could ever ask, oftentimes when we least deserve it. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Satan knows you and I as well. He is not omniscient, but he is privy to many of our weaknesses. Being “saved” is not a get out of jail free card either. The devil takes great pleasure in causing us to miss the mark. If we allow, he will take us further down the wrong path than we want to go and leave us longer than we desire to stay. Even the great Apostle Paul said, when I desire to go good, evil is always present.
Arrow That Flies by Day – your spiritual battle zone; specific enemy assignments directed toward your life to defeat you. They are deliberately and meticulously aimed at the spot that can cause the most damage.
In ancient warfare, fiery projectiles were used in several different ways. The Romans perfected these on-fire missiles which heretofore would sometimes burn out before they reached the intended target. What they came up with could be likened to the prerequisite for todays bullet. By placing flammable liquid inside a tube and placing a wick with a stopper on the other end, they could light the fiery dart, shoot it by with a bow and it would burn until it hit it’s desired target, the enemy soldier. Upon impact, the wick popped out, the liquid spilled over the soldier’s armor, which would ignite and basically cook the soldier inside of his armor. * Talk about an Easy-Bake Oven! (pun intended) Satan’s fiery darts are no different. They are aimed at us individually as the introduction of contrary thoughts that unguarded, may incubate in our minds, manifesting, sooner or later, in inevitable destruction.
Our faith in the finished work of Jesus is the shield by which we are protected. Just as the Roman soldier’s shield covered his entire body, your faith is the protection that extinguishes all fiery darts. This is an intangible “knowing” that cannot be borrowed. As the scripture says,” …the just shall live by his faith.”
