The first step in obtaining life insurance is to complete an application which is then reviewed by underwriters. They determine whether or not the risk of insuring you, based on your lifestyle and habits, health, etc., outweighs the benefits of the company making money (lots of it). The object, in the insurers point of view is for the insured (you) to live a long time, continuing to pay the monthly premium. In most, if not all cases, the risk factors determines how much you pay. In some instances, it may be determined that you are not worth the risk and your application for insurance is denied.
Many ministers have preached that one must “qualify” for God’s goodness and His protection. And if the Bible is not “rightly divided”, one can easily get the wrong impression.
Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him on high, because he has known My name. NKJV
When you read this passage, you are left feeling like your protection is your responsibility. “If I don’t love God enough, then I don’t qualify.” That is totally incorrect my friend! First of all, if we are honest, no human being could love God enough to warrant an approved “application”. Can you see the heavenly underwriting team looking over and the discussing the game film your life? Then Jesus, looks it over and stamps “APPROVED” with His blood, paying the policy in full!
It is the cross that makes all the difference, and all scripture must be filtered through the cross of Christ to be relevant to us today. For we are not under the law, but under grace (Romans 6:14b). Let’s look at the Amplified Classic version of Psalm 91:14.
Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he knows and understands My name [has a personal knowledge of My mercy, love, and kindness—trusts and relies on Me, knowing I will never forsake him, no, never]. AMPC
The more you get to know a person, the more willing you are to trust them. To “set your love upon Him” means to work on your relationship with the the Father through His Son Jesus. He has already shown us His mercy, love, and kindness by giving His life as payment for our sin. That was over 2000 years ago, but only a personal experience with the Savior has the ability to influence your life. It is what you know of Him that sets you on high, far above principalities and powers, and rulers of darkness. It is only then that you will be willing to trust that He will never leave you, no never!
