Psalm 91 has always been in the Bible. The fact that you may have a bible does not make the promises of God work for you. If that was the case, that book gathering dust on the coffee table or the faded one in the back window of the vehicle would have brought everyone deliverance by now. At my church, we have been confessing Psalm 91 over our lives for more than two decades. Understanding the context and the power of this scripture is the key to having these promises manifest in our lives.
In light of the corona virus, COVID -19, and the present worldwide pandemic, our stance as believers is crucial to navigate through this crisis. Let me preface what I am about to say with this: taking necessary precautions and recommendations by medical professionals does not display a lack of faith in God. However, it would be beneficial to follow Mary’s (the mother of Jesus) advice; “Whatever He tells you to do, do it!” If your ministry did not cancel services while others did, it is not for you to judge. Your leaders’ responsibility is their flock, not other congregations.
Now, let’s talk about Psalm 91.
Reading is fundamental. Therefore, verses one and two tell us all that we need to know.
1. He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
What are you “dwelling” on? Is the corona virus taking up all of the space in your mind? It is irresponsible to ignore what’s going on, but our hope and our faith as believers are set on things above. We say be believe God and trust in Him. If this is true, then we abide under the shadow of the almighty against whose power no foe can withstand.
2. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”
The second verse goes hand in hand with the first. “I will say…” What’s coming out of your mouth? I guarantee that the only thing that can come out of your mouth is that which you have been dwelling on the most.
That’s enough for today. In the coming days, I will go through Psalm 91, line upon line, and precept upon precept. My prayer is that the eyes of our understanding are enlightened that we may “know” the hope of His calling, our inheritance in him, and the exceeding greatness of His power toward us as believers.
