Is the Bible Boring?

It’s not a loaded question. In fact, I would venture to say that many “believers” experience difficulty actually taking the time to read and/or study the Bible. I mean, why take calculus if you don’t have to, and math is your least favorite subject? My Pastor made this statement last Sunday. “It’s amazing to me how you can have trouble sleeping at night, come to church, and go to sleep!” (paraphrased). If it’s difficult to stay awake while in church, then no wonder our eyes get heavy when we make an effort to read the scriptures.

As football season is approaching (Hallelujah!), I can promise you, I will have no problem watching the Crimson Tide in action for two reasons; One, because it’s “my team”, and two, I am a student of the game. Not only that, but I immerse myself into every aspect of the contest. I become the coach, making unheard suggestions as to what play to call. As a player/captain, I suggest what play is coming (on defense) and try to get the players in the proper position (like they can really hear me!) As a fan, I anticipate the touchdown; I rejoice in victory; and agonize in defeat. I do all of these things and the outcome of the game doesn’t affect my life one way or the other. The University Of Alabama does not send me any checks, but I “see myself” in the game.

For The Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart”. Hebrews 4:12 KJV

This verse captures the essence of the Bible in one thought. It sounds like a conglomeration of characters from the Avengers! The Bible is so much more than a book of old stories and a list of rules by which to live. The Word of God is alive and active. But it is of no use to us if we never “see ourselves” in the scriptures. David killing Goliath will be nothing more than an unrelated story unless you can “see yourself” slaying giants in your life because God is with you! Everyone has issues; so we can identify with the woman with the issue of blood that had been in that condition for 12 years. Can you “see yourself” now? – realizing that it doesn’t matter how long you’ve been in a situation; one encounter with Jesus can set you free! Beloved, the Bible is far from boring! It’s the only book I know that while you’re reading one passage, the Holy Spirit will be speaking to you and give you a specific answer that has nothing to do with the passage, but everything to do with your life right now.
