Peculiar?

If you were God’s only representative in the earth, what kind of representation would God have?  We are supposed to be peculiar people according to 1Peter 2:9. This does not mean strange as in a couple fries short of a happy meal. We’ve all seen enough of these “christians”  almost scare believers back to the devil’s side. Peculiar means being unique as God’s possessions. Since we belong to Him, our actions and our character should reflect the character of God.

When we fly off the handle, cuss somebody out, flip ’em  “the bird”, or even throw or break things out of anger, we are reflecting Satan’s character. I recall recently in my own experience, when I accidentally dropped my cell phone in a bathtub full of water.  It didn’t get fully submerged before I caught it, but it was obviously wet.  It wasn’t long before it started malfunctioning. The more it did this, the more irritated I got. I became so upset that I actually considered throwing the phone up against the wall, smashing it into pieces.  A lot of good that would do. What made me so angry?  Probably the fact that I knew better and shouldn’t have had my phone near that water anyway. Kind of a silly reaction since destroying  the cell phone wouldn’t have made the situation any better, nor would I have felt better. I would have certainly had to purchase another one.

Obviously, Jesus would have never responded that way. And since I am a son of the Most High God, having His DNA in me, I was capable of responding better. God’s people are equipped to handle adversity and not faint, quit, or fly off the handle. When we respond to adversity correctly, others will see the light of God in us and be drawn to Him. We are God’s only advertising agency in the earth. Our lives are actually the marketing tool for the Kingdom of God.

Sure, what happened to you or the circumstance you were in may have warranted an ungodly response. Trust me, many of them do. Being angry is not wrong, it is a valid emotion. The challenge is to “sin not”. Fortunately, no one else witnessed my mini tirade. I did resist the urge to smash my phone, which saved me some discomfort. You see, the cell phone dried out later that evening and actually started working again.  Thank God for lessons learned in private.
